BACH-KURTÁG: Chorales
LIGETI: Pieces for Piano Four-Hands
VOLKMANN: Hungarian Sketches, Op.24
KURTÁG: Suite (1951)
SCHUBERT: Divertissement à la Hongroise
“The piano duet, perhaps the most intimate of musical genres, is showcased this evening through some of the finest Hungarian works written in this form, set within a historical context, while uncovering the many shades of “Hungarianness” embedded in the music. What passed for a “Hungarian style” in the 18th century was a far cry from its evolution two centuries later. Schubert’s early 19th-century Divertissement à la hongroise, for instance, vividly conjures up the verbunkos style, a musical vernacular of noble origins that had been popular for centuries. To bring a new perspective to this Magyar-inspired work of Schubert, who had also taught in the Kingdom of Hungary, we will present a rare performance of the complete “Hungarian sketches” of Robert Volkmann, a German composer and contemporary of Liszt who lived in Pest, depicting the Biedermeier milieu of 19th-century Hungary. Fast-forward to 20th century Hungary, who better to turn to than the iconic György Ligeti and György Kurtág, two of the greatest composers of our time? We will present almost all of Ligeti’s four-hand compositions (lasting no more than ten minutes), juxtaposed with the youthful Suite by the 25-year-old Kurtág. Meanwhile, Kurtág’s Bach transcriptions do not merely evoke a distant – yet so familiar and homely – past, but also transport us to an even more distant, transcendent world, a realm of timeless spirituality.” (László Stachó, translated by Tony Chen Lin)
